Back in the 19th century the people faced an economic depression that was the worst in American history ever seen at that point in time. Not much was able to be done besides have some major businesses build themselves up and eventually help stimulate the economy, but at the cost of many smaller businesses and terrible work conditions within America. The only positive was that what little competition that was within America stayed in America which kept commerce flowing within the country.
Today in our modern time we face another period where we are overflowing with debt and job loss. Today we are faced with the simple fact that too many products are coming from foreign industries such as China. If some of the laws enforced back in the late 19th century where tariffs were raised much more than the current rate and kept that way just as President McKinley and many other presidents before him had done we may spur more economic opportunities and have workers keep their drastically improved working conditions that they so very much needed back in the 19th century. This country could once again prosper just as President McKinley had intended without the many trusts this country once had.
