This is a primary source engraving of a cartoon by Thomas Nast. The cartoon depicts the corruption of government. This cartoon is specifically from the Boss Tweed Ring. Boss Tweed was stealing money from the public by having "expenses" for a certain price, but lying about it and getting money for it that was excessive to the amount he actually needed. He did this so much and got millions and millions of dollars off of it. Nast saw the corruption and used engraving such as this one to take it to the public and give them knowledge about what was taking place. Not everyone could read, so the reason why he was so effective is because he got the point across and could do it in pictures, which everyone could view and understand no matter what. This specific cartoon shows the big "money bag" head on Tweed showing that he is all about the money and taking it from the individuals. "The Brains" at the bottom is also important because it is mocking Tweed in the sense of showing that this is who is ruling the area. . . a thief.
